banner:
noun – a long strip of cloth bearing a slogan or design, hung in a public place or carried in a demonstration or procession. “students waved banners and chanted slogans”
This is a new pattern from cross-stitch designer, activist, educator, and trans person Dee of Dee’s Twenty Stitches (they/them). It is a banner statement and the first in a new series called Let’s Make a Statement. See Dee’s Instagram post embedded below which talks more about their thoughts, and you can also read the positive feedback from the cross-stitch community!
Dee charmed their way into our hearts and minds over a year ago with a devilishly handsome smile and their first design titled Trans Pride Tapestry. It is of a beautiful unicorn pattern and collaboration with artist Kari of Uncanny Kari (she/her). Aside from pride and holiday patterns, Dee also shares their perspective and provides us with educational portions of trans lives at the end of their Flosstube videos. With SALs and stitch prompts being a big part of the cross-stitch community, Dee put together a Stitch 4 Pride – a stitching and learning challenge – for Pride Month in June of 2022 and all year long for 2023!
Remember it is not the job of marginalized people to educate us, so we should listen when they feel like they can share their perspective. I also know change and awareness is hard. It makes us feel uncomfortable, but that’s sometimes what growth feels like. Please lend an ear to Dee’s Flosstube where their videos are indeed a safe space, and yet we still may feel a little bit uncomfortable.
And consider joining Stitch 4 Pride 2023 with Dee’s intro video and follow their links in the description box.
