Natalie of Embroidery Art by Nat shared this beautiful pattern on Instagram Sunflower Bouquet. A citizen of Kyiv, Natalie tells us that the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine! Indeed, a quick Google search showed that Ukraine is the world’s largest producer and exporter of sunflower seeds because it has the perfect climate and soil. Also, people of the area popularized sunflower oil in the 1800s as an alternative to butter and lard during Lent.
Unfortunately her post comes just four days after Russia began invading Ukraine. The sunflower has recently became a symbol of resistance however. See this news article from Independent that talks about the recent viral video that started it. Via her Instagram account, Natalie also shares posts and resources on how we can aid her fellow Ukrainians.
Focusing back on Natalie and her stitchy inspiration, she designs hand embroidery as well as teaches it. A couple of years ago, she created a Stitching Club on Patreon with educational tutorials and resources because people kept asking her for help. Natalie said she calls it her “little online embroidery school”. The Patreon Stitching Club also includes materials and patterns. She also offers free tutorials and inspiration on YouTube and Instagram and has free patterns for beginners on her website. See all the links below.
