Halloween Coffin Decorations from Michaels

Do you know the difference between a coffin and casket? You can probably tell from the shape right? Coffins typically are hexagon-shaped to accommodate the human body. Before they year 1700 in England, coffins went to the wealthy while less fortunate souls were wrapped in cloth and put directly into the ground according to this article by Coffin Works From Coffins to Caskets: An American History. For many years however, the coffin was used to transport a body and are still in use today.

There a few theories as to the rise of popularity with caskets in the US, but the Coffin Works article suggests it has to do with the American Civil War: “It was the violence combined with the scale of death that led to the ‘the beautification of death’ in America during this period…” – Sarah Hayes.

The use of the coffin as a modern day icon for Halloween in the US probably has to do with the use of them in old, scary movies and books and other imagery. Partially spurred on by retail marketing and certainly our love to decorate for Halloween, coffins make for a great macabre display or finishing idea for your needlework smalls.
